The Germania Story

How it all started

Germania Mutual Aid Association was organized in 1896 in Perry, Texas under the leadership of Otto Rau, the first president. It was formed to provide protection for farm property. At that time insuring property in rural and small community areas was virtually impossible. The 31 founding members, including Rau, saw the need for dependable mutual insurance and… committed to the principle that bearing one another’s burdens made them all stronger.

In 1960, the name changed to Germania Farm Mutual Aid Association to comply with the state’s requirements. However, it wasn’t until 1982 when the name formally changed to Germania Farm Mutual Insurance Association (GFMIA).

Now known simply as Germania Insurance, the Association now has over 200,000 members and as a farm mutual, we are unique:

• Our members have a voice in their Association;
• Our members are an essential part of the meetings and reinforce our membership-owned farm mutual insurance concept – setting Germania Farm Mutual Insurance Association apart from most other insurers in Texas and;
• Our members are affiliated with 360 active Local Chapters/agencies throughout the state;
• We insure property only in Texas

Headquartered in Brenham, Texas, Germania has grown into the largest farm mutual insurance company in Texas. It is comprised of subsidiary companies, Germania Insurance Company (1978), Germania Life Insurance Company (1983), Germania Fire & Casualty Company (1984), Germania General Agency (1980), Germania Select Insurance Company (2002) and Texas Heritage Insurance Company (2006). These companies enable us to offer a full range of insurance products—home, auto, liability, commercial and life insurance, plus the financial services of Germania Credit Union, a member-owned credit union.
